Can a husband sue his wife for abandonment?

My son fell in love with a wonderful woman he met while incarcerated. She was a guard. She persued the relationship, arranged for them to be married over the phone, which they did, then within 3 weeks she cut off all contact with him, moved, and won't respond at all, absolutely no contact and no explanation. They were together for a year or so, she won't give him closure and he is grieveing the loss of his friend and wife. He truely loves her, yet feels he is hanging on a string, he just wants to know what happened and if she is divorceing him or what. Closure will help him move forward, but she refuses to contact him at all. She tells me his mother that she loves him, but seldom does she even allow contact with me. I love her, but my son is going crazy and is deeply depressed. What would you do?
