Closing my laptop lid means it stays on standby when i open it!?

When i close my laptop lid and then open it again the seen just stays blank (on standby), i tired pressing all the ons and clicking the mouse but i don't know what to do its becoming very frustrating. My laptop is an Advent if that helps. thank you.
