I'm 39 yrs old, and have never had chickenpox is this a concern for me to worry about?

My granddaughter has chicken pox. I have never had them. Am I at risk for getting them? Should I stay away from her? My mom told me to stay away, cuz it might be deadly for me. I do have have asthma. I feel i'm in not in good health.
