As an Evangelical Christian, where should I go in the Bible to see that God wants a strong defense?

I keep hearing Christians in my world tell me that defense should be one of our top issues and while I see God using the military in the OT, I don't see him asking for the building of bigger armies. I see him saying to trust him. What am I missing?
